속사정 말하기– 언더웨어 스토리
크던지 작던지 매일 매일 그룹들과 만나고 얘기를 나누면서 항상 이런 질문을 받는다. “ 존, 어떻게 이 일을 시작하게 되었나요? “ 그리고 “당신의 성공의 비밀은 무엇인가요?
내 속사정, 언더웨어 스토리를 듣게 되면 내가 가진 최고의 가능성에 이르도록 해 준 그 시스템을 어떻게 만들게 되었는지를 알게 된다.
속사정, 언더웨어 스토리라 불리는 것은 무엇일까? 특별하게 우리 비즈니스에서 통하는 스토리텔링과도 같은 것이다. 우리가 입는 속옷, 언더웨어 처럼 다른 사람들에게 우리는 우리 자신의 속사정, 언더웨어 스토리를 숨기면 살고 있다.
그런데 막상 언더웨어 스토리를 드러내놓고 얘기하게 되면, 그 스토리야 말로 배움에 있어서 가장 강력한 무기이자, 서로를 돕는데 최고의 무기로 작동하게 된다.
언더웨어 스토리는 다음의 네가지 특성을 지닌다
- 자신에 대한 이야기 이며
- 한가지 혹은 더 많은 당신의 성격에 대한 아주 깊은 인식이자
- 당신과 그 이야기를 듣는 사람 사이에 신뢰를 더욱 깊게 만들며
- 당신의 자신감을 만들어 준다.
인간이 말을 하기 시작하면서 우리는 항상 이야기를 해왔다. 개인적인 이야기들, 가족의 배경, 어디서 왔으며, 어떤 실패를 경험했었는지, 그리고 어떤 성공을 거뒀는지를 다른 사람들과 나눠왔다. 세대를 통해 지식을 전달해 왔으며, 이 스토리 텔링 전통이야 말로 언더웨어 스토리의 심장이라고 말할 수 있다.
당신의 언더웨어 스토리를 통해 다른 사람들은 당신의 장점과 단점을 알게 되고, 그것을 음지에서 양지로 끌어올릴 것이다. 그리고 그들 역시 자신의 이야기를 당신과 나누게 된다면 그들의 이야기를 들어보라. 어떤 판단이나 편견 없이 말이다. 그리고 상대의 이야기를 존중해 주자. 그럼으로써 상호 존경이 이뤄지게 된다
자신의 속사정- 언더웨어 스토리를 드러내는 것이 편치는 않을 것이다. 특히 그 스토리가 당신이 경험한 불행하고 어려운 경험이라면 더욱 그러할 것이고 말이다. 그런데 당신이 신뢰하는 다른 사람에게 그걸 공개한다는 것은 그 사람과의 관계를 더욱 강화시킨다는 것을 의미한다. 당신이 한번도 선택하여 본 적이 없는 길로 그 사람들이 인도하고 지원을 아끼지 않을 것이다.

My underwear story introduces others to how I came to develop the system that allowed me to reach my highest potential.
What is an underwear story? It’s a version of storytelling that is particular to our business. Similar to the underwear we wear, we often keep our underwear stories hidden from others.
But I realized when we actually reveal our underwear stories, they serve as powerful tools to learn about and help each other.
An underwear story has four features. It:
- Is about you.
- Provides a deep insight into one or more aspects of your personality.
- Deepens trust between you and the listener.
- Builds your self-confidence.
Since humans have learned to speak, we’ve told stories. We’ve shared about our personal and family backgrounds, where we came from, our failures, and our triumphs. We’ve used stories to pass knowledge from one generation to another. This story-telling tradition is at the heart of the underwear story.
Through your underwear stories, others will be able to help you shed light on your strengths and weaknesses. If others are sharing their own stories with you, then you will listen to one another’s underwear stories without judgment and treat the other person’s story with respect. As a result, you develop mutual respect.
Revealing your underwear story may not be comfortable—especially if it reflects unhappy or difficult events you’ve experienced. But when you open up to people you trust, you strengthen your connection to those who will guide and support you as you embark on one of the most challenging and fulfilling journeys you’ll ever take.
